05 popular places to visit in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Sao Beach, Phu Quoc – The “postcard-perfect” beach

Sao Beach is located near the south of An Thoi Port and 30 kilometers from Duong Dong Town. Mother of Nature favors Sao Beach with the white sand beach embracing the crystal blue sea and swaying palm trees. Visiting Sao Beach, you can find many special marine species you haven’t ever seen before such as needlefish, jellyfish and sea urchin.

An Thoi islands:

Just off the southern tip of Phu Quoc, these 15 islands and islets are a paradise of white sand and blue waters. They can be visited by chartered boat for a fine day of sightseeing, fishing, swimming and snorkelling. Hon Thom (Pineapple Island) is about 3km in length and is the largest island in the group; it's now connected to Phu Quoc by the Hon Thom Cable Car, the world's longest over-sea ride.

Other islands here include Hon Dua (Coconut Island), Hon Roi (Lamp Island), Hon Vang (Echo Island), Hon May Rut (Cold Cloud Island), the Hon Dams (Shadow Islands), Chan Qui (Yellow Tortoise) and Hon Mong Tay (Short Gun Island). The only real development at this stage is the new Sun World and attached water park Aquapolis on Hon Thom Island.

Most boats depart from An Thoi on Phu Quoc, but you can make arrangements through hotels on Long Beach, as well as with dive operators.

Long Beach – The hub of outdoor activities

Long Beach is draped invitingly along the west coast from Duong Dong to An Thoi. Development concentrates in the north, near Duong Dong, where the recliners and rattan umbrellas of the various resorts rule; these are the only stretches that are kept garbage-free. With its west-facing aspect, sunsets can be stupendous.

Although not the prettiest, Long Beach is a good budget choice for accommodation and socialising. Duong Dong and its night market are walking distance from the beach's north end.

There are several small lanes heading from the main Tran Hung Dao street drag down to Long Beach that shelter some of the nicest places to stay and eat. There are a few bamboo huts where you can buy drinks, but bring water if planning a long hike along the beach. There should be no problem for beachcombers to stretch out their towels on the sand, but you may get moved on quickly if you get too close to paying guests.

Beach clubs and bars have popped up in recent years to cater for the many independent travellers staying in cheaper digs away from the beach.

Beachside massages are popular, but be clear about what you're paying for: a neck rub can quickly turn into a foot massage, manicure and leg-hair threading – often all simultaneously.

Duong Dong town

The island’s main town and chief fishing port on the west coast is a tangle of budget hotels catering to domestic tourists (although foreigners are allowed), streetside stalls, bars and shops. The old bridge in town is a great vantage point to photograph the island’s fishing fleet crammed into the narrow channel, and the gritty, bustling produce market makes for an interesting stroll. Most visitors come for the night market, seafood and a glimpse of local life on the island.

Ganh Dau Beach - The mecca for sporty people (Near Vinpearl complex)

Departing from Duong Dong Town, coming across the Phu Quoc Nation Park, you will see a picturesque beach, called Ganh Dau Beach, before your eyes. Located on the remote northwestern tip of the island, Ganh Dau Beach is lined with the homes of the local fishing families and two distinct beaches. Ganh Dau Beach is a palm-fringed, sun-drenched beach shielded by two mountains. The sand in Ganh Dau Beach is straw in color and a bit coarse due to a vast amount of coral found in the water. Visiting Ganh Dau Beach, you can drop in Nguyen Trung Truc Temple to read the story about the life of the national hero Nguyen Trung Truc on the wooden board. If you’d love to understand more about the daily lives of the locals, visit Ganh Dau Fishing Village or Rach Vem Hamlet.

In addition, you can visit Turtle Island, the lovely uninhabited island, and utter the relaxation for a full day like Robinson Crusoe. This island is also an ideal snorkeling and scuba diving spot. Alternatively, you can lounge on Mouse Island, and observe many beautiful birds with the naked eyes. To complete your journey perfectly, don’t forget to visit the Safari Zoo Phu Quoc with approximately 3000 animals. It’s also a great choice to experience the Amusement Park with fast water slides, roller coasters, and castle. You also can visit the Phu Quoc Casino, the unique casino in Vietnam.
